Technical growth and the risk associated with it are directly proportional in today’s advanced world. One of the vital risks that has gained more strength during the present day is, cyber attack, that too in its different modes and forms. Cyber attacks spare none in the digital space and the challenge doubles if your business is not equipped with strong prevention tools. Narrowing further down, the above mentioned risks and challenges seem to be affecting the small business set ups more, while compared to the larger firms.

The unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 that tested our lives, has tested the cyber security of businesses too. Statistical reports say that cyber crimes have increased rapidly in 2020-2021 while comparing to previous years.

With the rapid rise of work from home mode, the attackers find it easy to find their targets. It became obvious that not all organisations have the infrastructure to provide security solutions to all their workers, who are working from different locations and using different electronic devices according to their convenience.

There are different kinds of threats that a business would face digitally in 2021. They include cloud-based threats caused due to the digital transformation, which will make the cloud security risks critical for small to medium firms, internal threats that could arise due to lack of awareness and negligence by the staff or stakeholders, and phishing attacks. The reports also says that during the later half of this year, attacks on remote workers will increase, data exfiltration will become bigger than data encryption, ransomware will be looking at new targets, and attackers will use more automation and the number of malware samples will increase. There is a serious need to consider these threats, since up to 66% of businesses have reported facing cyber attacks within this year.

Certain steps could be taken to reduce their cyber risks by the firms, especially when a bulk of staff are working from home. The first and foremost step is to educate the internal workforce and to make a strong action plan. Let them stay updated about all the threats and be able identify the glitches themselves. Also there should be an active plan for immediate response towards cyber attacks. When security is seriously taken into consideration, one needs to invest for the same uncompromisingly. Cyber health of the business should constantly be tracked and necessary softwares or antivirus filters should be thoroughly updated. Regular audits, ensuring data encryption, taking extra checkups on cybersecurity systems on a regular basis, etc should be the necessary steps taken ahead, to free your business from the clutches of hackers.
